--Licorice extract
Licorice Extract is obtained from wild and naturally growing licorice roots, from central Asia, China and Mediterranean countries. Depending on the origin of the raw material and the supply form, the extract offers a versatile taste spectrum, ranging from mild to sweet-aromatic, caramel-like, bitter-sweet and/or spicy.
Licorice Extract (succus liquiritiae) is the natural and concentrated juice which is obtained by water and steam extraction of the licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.). The main active component in the roots – glycyrrhizin – is a sweet glycoside. Licorice extract is used in many industrial applications for its flavouring, sweetening and/or debittering characteristics.

LICORICE | HARVEST | GLYCYRRHIZIN |
Licorice extract is obtained from the root of the licorice plant. The plant grows up to 1m and blooms (violet, blue and white) in late summer. | The main harvest takes place in spring and autumn. The roots need 3-4 years to re-grow after the harvest. | The active substance of licorice extract is about 30 times sweeter than saccharose. Licorice extract naturally creates a typical sweet taste even at low dosage levels. |
The effects of Liquorice extract
1.The compounds, glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid, possess the effect of
adrenal glucocorticoid, it can improve the endocrine regulation ability of the body.
2.Protective effect on digestive system
Glycyrrhetinic acid and glycyrrhizic flavone are the main active ingredients in the treatment of gastric ulcers. They not only inhibit the secretion of gastric acid, but also promote the healing of ulcers. At the same time, licorice extract has antispasmodic effects on gastric cramps.
3.Anti-inflammatory effect
The anti-inflammatory ingredients are glycyrrhizic acid, glycyrrhetinic acid, glycyrrhizin, and glycyrrhizic flavone, which possesses the effect of glucocorticoid.
4.Antiviral effect
Glycyrrhizic acid compounds activate host immune function by directly acting on various virus particles and inducing interferon to enhance the activity of natural killer cells and macrophages. The broad-spectrum antiviral effect is a promising antiviral drug. It has obvious therapeutic effects on HIV, herpes simplex virus, varicella-like herpes virus, and vesicular stomatitis virus.
5.Antibacterial effect
The alcohol extract of licorice and sodium glycyrrhizinate can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, tuberculosis, Escherichia coli and amoeba in vitro. The minimum effective concentration of sodium glycyrrhizin in vitro is 30 ~ 60μg / ml. Glycyrrhetinic acid can be increased in test tubes, and barberry can inhibit the efficacy of Staphylococcus aureus.
6.Detoxification
①Extractum Glycyrrhizae and glycyrrhizic acid have obvious detoxification effects on chloral hydrate, strychnine, urethane, cocaine, benzene arsenic, mercury and etc. The detoxification effect of tobacco area and barbital clearance takes second place.
②Glycyrrhizic acid has detoxifying effect on pufferfish poison and snake venom.
7.Antitussive and expectorant effect
Glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid and its derivatives have an antitussive effect, and its antitussive effect is produced through the central nervous, and choline salt of glycyrrhetinic acid is the strongest component of antitussive effect. Licorice promotes the secretion of hydrazone body in laryngopharyngeal bronchus, which has the function of expectorant.
8.Anti-cerebral ischemia
Glycyrrhizic acid can significantly increase the activity of ATPase after reperfusion and DHase, improve energy metabolism, reduce cerebral edema and promote the recovery of brain.
9.Licorice extract can prevent diabetes.
10.Protective effect on the vestibular of the ear
Glycyrrhizic acid can reduce the damage of streptomycin to vestibular nerve. After combining glycyrrhizic acid and streptomycin base to generate streptomycin glycyrrhizinate, it does not affect its antibacterial activity, but it can reduce the damage of streptomycin to the vestibular nerve of the ear.
11.Antispasmodic analgesic effect
Glycyrrhizin is the main component of isoligenin, and glycyrrhiza paeoniflora has better curative effect on spasticity; licorice is effective on eyelid muscle spasm, intestinal muscle spasm and hemodialysis muscle spasm.
12.Licorice extract has the functions of whitening, freckle removal and anti-ultraviolet.
The application of Licorice extract
1. Application in cosmetics
According to market research, compared with the situation in 1998, many natural whitening and freckle-removing products have been added with natural beauty ingredients. Among them, the most used natural ingredients are licorice extract and placenta extract. For example, Nivea whitening protective day cream contains licorice extract; Yuxi natural whitening cream formula contains licorice extract, grape seed extract, mulberry root and natural algae.
2. Application in food
Licorice and extracts can be used as food additives to give foods sweet taste and improve taste. They can be added to beer, beverages, candy, ice cream, baked snacks, soy protein imitation meat products, sauces and soy sauce. Adding licorice fermentation to draft beer can make the beer more foamy and long-lasting aromatic. The licorice extract can be used as an antioxidant for fat food; adding licorice juice to the soy sauce can inhibit the soy saltiness and soften the flavor.
3. Application in the medical field
Licorice and extracts can be widely used in medicine. Licorice is used as a good medicine in traditional Chinese medicine in China and Japan Ingredients for emollients, detergents, cold toothpaste, etc. In addition, it can also be used as a natural soothing cleaner for the oral respiratory tract.
